“Nothing in this world can take the place of Persistence.
Talent will not; nothing is more commonplace than unsuccessful men with talent.
Genuis will not; unrewarded genuis is almost a proverb.
Education alone will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.
Persistence and Determination alone are omnipotent.”
Wanted to blog an entry about willingness…
My pet topic. Cos I believe that this is the one paramount ingredient to a life of ministry to God. Doesn’t matter if you are a full-time pastor or a lay cell group leader or a choir member or an usher, having the right attitude of willingness will be what sets you apart for God to use.
Abraham was willing. Willing to bring his promised & beloved son Isaac up the mountain as a sacrifice to God. Willing to trust in Him.
Isaac was willing. He wasn’t some young kid of 5 or 6 years of age when he went up that mountain with his dad Abraham. He was a youth, with his own ideas, own ideals. He asked his dad, where the lamb for the sacrifice was. Abraham gave this cyptic answer that God will provide and offered no other option. But Isaac was willing, willing to lay aside his own doubts and questions and trust not just in his earthly father but in his heavenly Father as well.
If you were in Isaac’s shoes that day, what might you have done?
Maybe you wouldn’t even have come out of bed that morning to go with Abraham to offer that sacrifice. A day to sleep in, and to sacrifice that? No way, man!
Maybe you would have relentlessly asked Abraham about the sacrifice. ‘What do you mean God will provide?’ ‘How will He do it?’ ‘But there’s nothing up there ya?’ ‘Are you wasting my time?’ ‘Are you sure?’ Isaac stopped after one question. Would you have?
Maybe you would have refused to be sacrificed.
Maybe you would be horrified at the thought of it.
Maybe you would have frozen in your steps.
But Isaac… a man of faith, willingness and abiding trust in God… When we sing ‘my life’s in Your hands…’ Isaac’s example, to me, is the epitome of what this song means.
I pray that I, too, am able to follow Him without having to always know the how or why or when or where first.
Ps Yock Kiang shared a word in yesterday’s leaders’ meeting… And the one thing that struck me, even till this morning was that he shared vision births forth passion, and passion births forth a vision! What is the thing that grips you? That captures your attention? That is your motivating factor?
I’ve been out with the JAMs people a few times, and the thing that always strikes me is how they can spot an ID in a crowd! It’s like radar vision… The same with Nic. When we’re on the MRT, and I am oblivious (as usual), he would notice a Down’s Syndrome kid or one who is autistic. They may not be so obvious, yet something about the IDs would capture the attention (and heart) of Nic & his other JAMs CG members. Amazing! :)
What do I notice? Well… One of the things that ‘bug’ me big time would be the use of English… Whether in speech or writing, I am always very aware of bad English. Haha! I’ve learnt over the years that to publicly correct another’s mistake will make me Miss Popular, not. But in my heart of hearts… When I hear a mispronounced word or bad tenses or whatever, i go ‘argh!’ on the inside of me. Occasionally, the inner ‘argh’ does manifest itself on the outside though… =)
Guess this is what makes me a pretty strict CG evaluator, whenever I go around to other CGMs. One area I would always highlight is grammatical errors or enunciation or pronunciation… I believe the heart of a message is only as good as the delivery of it!
Groan… Now that FOP’s over, I got to get to settling these things (amongst others):
1. Confirm order of service for my matrimony. Worship leader… Muzos… MC…
2. When to get the keys to the flat?
3. Settle reno
4. Settle furniture
5. Get the $ to settle #3 & #4 (Hahaha!)
6. Print the invitation cards for the matrimony & dinner (But first to get the pics from Rach & Amy to design)
7. Collect the dinner cards from Exelsior Hotel (2 weeks overdue…)
8. Wedding car?
9. Register @ ROM
10. Confirm guest list
Oh goodness… the list gets longer the longer i think!!!
Father God… Need time & energy!!!
Well… There IS a beginning after all! Woo-hoo!
After lots half-hearted, last minute pull-outs, and aborted attempts at blogging, I’ve decided to get it going. LOL… Will it last? Will I update often? Or will this blog die a slow but natural death, like so many other blogs I see out there? [*Ahem* … Yeah, I am talking about your one-blog-a-year post, Ms. Cheng! :) ]
Guess I always fancied myself to be strong linguistically… i.e. I tend to have lesser problems with such English hiccups like tenses et al. But even growing up, I wasn’t a consistent diary writer. (Guess I felt a bit unsafe penning my thoughts down, what with 3 nosy sisters and my mom…) Of course it was a natural progression to come to this stage… Where I will pen my thoughts to the ‘world’ (or whoever is more voyeuristic/kaypoh/too free to do anything else…)
Well… I suddenly had this flashback of when I first came to church… That was when I learnt to pen down my thoughts better. Yah, was never good @ diary-keeping, but… was introduced to the ‘Accountability Report’ concept. Remember writing LONG LONG reports to Dawn before! Haha… Poor thing, she got the butt of my ‘logorrhea’ back then! And when Nic 1st went in to NS… Wah, we did the romantic letter-writing thingy… I’d start a LONG letter and keep adding on to it over the week before passing each other the letter over the weekend.. I’ll write to him before bed or during lessons (LOL…) and my letter would be a MASSIVE 10, 11 pages long! Haha!!! Poor Nic hoh? Well, dear, your training for all your thesis research ma. Give you chance to improve your reading speed! LOL!
Just finished the 2nd night of FOP. Really enjoyed Rev Ed Silvoso’s message tonight! Wah… Especially when he shared about how his life story and all… Really fun. Guess I also got used to his heavy accent! Looking forward to the Anniversary service! Think it’s going to be sooo fun! Not so the FOP… After a l-o-n-g day… phew!
Ah well… Here goes nothing! My very first blog!!! *pat on the back* Finally!!!
Got to go catch some shut eye… “Store power” for tmrw! Haha!
